Pancake day is coming up and soon the shops will be filling the shelves with pancake mix and lemon juice. It’s a classic combination. But there are a few combinations out there that are just as delicious (if not more), that you might not have tried yet. Here are some of the best things to top your pancakes with, even if they are a little wacky!
Pizza toppings
Pancakes might not be the most traditional pizza bases, but they work all the same. Simply top your pancake with tomato puree, cheese, and your favourite pizza toppings, and you’ve got yourself a savoury pancake.
Or, if you’d rather have a ‘sweet pizza’ or ‘dessert pizza’, use jam or some other sweet sauce, and top it with your favourite fruit or sweet treats.
Bananas and bacon
Bananas on pancakes – that works. Bacon on pancakes – that works too. But bananasĀ andĀ bacon is an unlikely combination. However, it does actually work. Drizzle golden syrup or another sweet sauce over the top, and you’ve got a surprisingly delicious sweet and savoury pancake.
Prosecco
Prosecco is all the rage at the moment. It seems to be the nation’s new favourite drink, so why not try adding it to your pancakes? You don’t have to literally tip prosecco all over your freshly made pancakes, but there is a nice syrupy sauce that you can make with prosecco and sugar. All you need to do is heat 150g sugar and 150ml of prosecco in a pan until they start to look like a syrup, then you’re all good to pour the sauce over your pancakes.Ā This sauce is even nicer if you add strawberries and cream as well.
Millionaire’s shortbread
Millionaire’s shortbread is a much loved combination of flavours, and it’s a combination that works excellently on the top of pancakes. Crumble up some shortbread and sprinkle it over your pancakes, then drizzle or dollop (depending on how much you want) some tinned caramel, and finish off with some melted chocolate.Ā Notice how there are no exact measurements for this one. That’s because you can add as much of each topping as you like!
