It’s officially the month of horror, so you might be interested to know that England’s most haunted village is a little closer to home than you might have thought.
Pluckley, a small village in Kent, is famous for being supposedly haunted by ghosts and ghouls. It was named Britain’s most haunted village in 1989.
The village is surrounded by apple orchards, which horror fans might consider a classic rural horror setting, much like corn fields.
The ghosts of Pluckley
Over the years, there have been between 12 and 16 ghost sightings in the village. Now that might not seem like a particularly big number, but when you think about it, one ghost sighting is more than enough.
So who are the ghosts? So far there have been a few different ghosts reported, including a screaming man, a highway man, a schoolmaster, and an old woman. That’s enough to scare anyone away.

If you want to test out the village’s haunted status for yourself, it’s worth making sure you hit all the best spooky spots during your visit.
You could take a ‘ghost tour’ where you’ll be walked around some of the village’s most haunted locations, like The Black Horse Inn and St Nicholas’s Church. You’ll also hear stories of sightings and local history to help boost the atmosphere.
Alternatively, you could take a self guided tour, and experience England’s most haunted village on your own. That’s if you fancy yourself brave enough though!
Is it really haunted?
This is a question that really comes down to whether or not you believe in ghosts. People have reported seeing some odd things in the village, and there have even been books written about the village.
But whether these sightings were real, or just the illusions of those on their way back from the pub is for you to decide.
